[Source: How to make Safari’s Private Browsing feature actually private]

Even if you run Safari in PRIVATE mode or FIREFOX in private mode, your web history exists at the os level.

“Now open a Terminal by selecting Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal. Enter the command:”

dscacheutil -cachedump -entries Host

You will then see a list of addresses you have been to.

The good news is that the dscacheutil utility comes with a way for you to clear those entries. Enter the command (in a Terminal):

dscacheutil -flushcache

If you want to get clever with this, I suggest:

Close Terminal

Open AUTOMATIOR (Applications/Utilities)

Turn record ON

Goto FINDER / GO / Utilities / TERMINAL

type dscacheutil -flushcache

hit return

quit Terminal

STOP the Automator recording

SAVE IT as a PLUG IN (if you want it to be available via right click on your desktop, or as an APPLICATION so you can just double click it) If you save it as a APP, put it in Applications, and then make a shortcut (alias) on the Desktop.

Then your making a clean slate at the os level……………………

CNET’s by Brooke Crothers,

Has a nice article on why. All excellent points and I’m glad he called them out. It didn’t make any sense to me why this would happen. Some highlights below, but be sure to read the full article linked at the bottom of the post.

“Some salient points from the article:

Performance: Chips based on the ARM design, such as Apple’s A series processors, won’t be able to deliver the necessary performance to keep pace with Intel’s x86 chips, according to Kanter. And, despite ARM’s vaunted power efficiency, that may not be a big advantage as ARM chips get faster. “There is no reason to believe that these efficiency advantages will scale for high-performance designs,” the article said.

Thunderbolt: The high-speed connection technology that Apple uses on its MacBook Pros and iMacs is based on Intel intellectual property: IP that the chipmaker is unlikely to license to ARM, Kanter said. “Moreover, it seems unlikely that Apple would have consented to such an arrangement if they were planning to abandon x86 in the near future,” according to Kanter.

Expertise: Echoing comments from Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Rodman and Renshaw, Kanter said that Apple is not a chip designer by nature and does not have the expertise to develop the very-high-performance chips required for MacBooks. Though past acquisitions of chip firms PA Semi and Intrinsity did give it “some chip expertise,” there isn’t a lot of evidence that “their teams are prepared for a much larger and more complex project.”

Gratuitous complexity: By adopting ARM chips for its MacBooks, Apple would consequently “split” its computer lineup: ARM for laptops and x86 for desktops, according to Kanter. That would result in unnecessary overhead for both Apple and consumers. “That would increase their validation and support costs to deal with different hardware and software,” Kanter said.”

Ran across some useful information in a forum today and thought I would share it. Conversation stemmed from someone asking how big of an SSD would they need to have a dual-boot config laptop. Every OS has extra stuff you don’t need so the following things were suggested to slim down the size. [Source]

When installing Mac OS X, click on “Customize” and remove X11 (if you won’t be using any applications that require it), any additional languages that you won’t need, and printer drivers that you won’t need (these can be downloaded from the internet later on if need be). That’s really all you need to do to slim down Mac OS X.

For Windows:

Disable System Restore and Previous Versions

Click on the Start button, right click on Computer, and then click Properties.

On the left hand side of the System Properties window, click on “System Protection”

Select the partition that Windows is installed on (typically “C:”), then click on “Configure…”

Select “Turn off System Protection”, then click on OK.

Remove SP1 un-installation files

Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click on “Disk Cleanup”.

Select the partition that Windows is installed on (typically “C:”), then click on OK.

Select “Service Pack Backup Files”, then click OK.

Disable Hibernation

Click on Start, All Programs, then click Accessories.

Right click on Command Prompt and choose “Run as Administrator”.

If you are prompted, provide consent or the appropriate credentials.

Type the following command into the command line: powercfg -h off

Press Enter.

FOR OSX you can also use the Sourceforge applicaiton “GrandPerspective”

http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/

“GrandPerspective is a small utility application for Mac OS X that graphically shows the disk usage within a file system. It can help you to manage your disk, as you can easily spot which files and folders take up the most space. It uses a so called tree map for visualisation. Each file is shown as a rectangle with an area proportional to the file’s size. Files in the same folder appear together, but their placement is otherwise arbitrary.”

Was reading a thread about people with laptops who upgraded to SSD’s and didn’t have extra space for games and wanted to install Steam and its games on an a secondary drive. It apparently works using Symbolic links.

Wiki snippet: “In computing, a symbolic link (also symlink or soft link) is a special type of file that contains a reference to another file or directory in the form of an absolute or relative path and that affects pathname resolution.”

The final edited instructions I found are below:

Move the “Steam Content” folder from your Documents folder to where you want your steam content stored (in this example, /Games)

If you want, rename the folder (for example, Steam)

Open another Finder window to your User folder.

You should have two Finder windows open: One open to your new steam content location (/Games) and one open to your User Folder

Open Terminal

Type

Code:

ln -s

into Terminal window. NOTE: There is a space after -s

Drag the new steam content folder (the Steam folder in /Games) to the Terminal window

Drag your Document folder from Finder

Delete the space after “Documents”, then type “/Steam\ Content” (Steam <Slash then space> Content)

Double check that the line looks similar to this:

Code:

ln -s /Games/Steam /Users/<your username>/Documents/Steam\ Content

Press Enter

Open your Document folder. There should now be a alias folder named “Steam Content”. Double click-it

The Finder window should now be at your new steam content folder (/Games/Steam). If not, delete the “Steam Content” alias in your Documents folder and try again from step 6

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4334

The Proximity Sensor, used to know when to turn off the keypad has been adjusted and hopefully will fix the issue I had noticed.

After the update, my phones thumbnails were gone for ALL images. They are just black. If you click somewhere on the black you see the image. So I’m guessing the thumbnails need to be regenerated. I will let you know what I find out.

Black thumbnails is an ios 4+ issue for some apparently and now I am on that list.

[UPDATED]

Field Test mode NOW available.
Want to measure your phones signal strength as a field engineer would?

• First, upgrade your iPhone 4—or any iPhone—to iOS 4.1.
• Dial *3001#12345#* into your phone. (hit CALL if you type the numbers first)

• To get out of the field test mode, just hit the home button.

Done. The signal bars will be replaced with a number (like -85). The more negative the number, the worse the signal is. Example: -110 is worse than -85. Once activated, you can switch between signal bars and number by touching on the number.

You get to walk around and check stuff out. There is no combat, but its still worth it. you will be amazed how good it looks, especially on the 4.

I Run my Phone’s browser in DEV mode which is why you see the 21 messages)

CNET had a nice tidbit on this and I wanted to share. If your running IOS4, you can, per device, choose to opt out of sending Apple info about your iTunes account. Yea the ads will be less targeted, but who cares? An app will of course broadcast it’s own name if its supporting ads, but they will not know what other aps you own, music you have, what you play frequently etc.

To opt out, simply navigate to the following link on your iOS 4 device: https://oo.apple.com/
If you receive an error message, “Unsuccessful Opt Out”, you may need to wait a few hours and try again.

Goto: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and download the installer and save it to your Desktop.

Download the uninstaller from Adobe and run it FIRST.

[Source = http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html?promoid=DTEGO]

The following information is from the ^ABOVE^ link.

How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control

Note: Visit the Adobe Flash Player Help and Support page for help with top issues.

You can uninstall the player only by using the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller. Follow these steps to download and run the appropriate uninstaller for your system:

Download the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller:

Windows: uninstall_flash_player.exe (226 KB) (updated 06/10/2010)

Mac OS X, version 10.4 and above: uninstall_flash_player_osx.dmg (238 KB) (updated 06/10/10)

Mac OS X, version 10.3 and below: uninstall_flash_player_osx_10.2.dmg (1.3 MB) (updated 05/27/08)

Mac OS 8.x, 9.x: uninstall_flash_player.hqx (33 KB)

Save the uninstaller file, choosing a location where you can find it – your Windows Desktop, for example. Macintosh users may need to open or unstuff the .hqx file.

Quit ALL programs. Check the Windows system tray to make sure no programs are still running. If any programs are using Flash Player, the uninstall will complete but some files may not be deleted. These programs can include web browsers such as Internet Explore, instant messaging clients such as AOL Instant Messenger, stand-alone SWFs, and projectors. If you mistakenly leave any program open, close all programs, and run the uninstaller again.

Run the uninstaller. This will remove Adobe Flash Player from your system.

NOW RUN THE INSTALLER FOR 10.1, and then restart your PC/MAC.

Finally………..

*** Dont forget to adjust the storage and data settings for FLASH***
http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager.html

Flash 10.1 Release notes (PDF link to Adobe).

…Now you are GOLDEN. you rule…… =;¬)
