Light Peak is Intel’s code-name for a new high-speed optical cable technology designed to connect electronic devices to each other using optical interconnect.[1][2] It has the capability to deliver high bandwidth, starting at 10 Gb/s, with the potential ability to scale to 100 Gb/s over the next decade.[3] At 10 Gb/s, a full-length Blu-Ray movie can be transferred in less than 30 seconds,[4][5] though no consumer mass storage devices currently support that speed of writing. It is intended as a replacement for current buses, such as USB, FireWire, and HDMI.[6] Potentially, 50 copper-based cables on the set of a 3D shoot today may one day be replaced with a single optical cable using Light Peak technology.[7] Light Peak technology was demonstrated at the Intel Developer Forum on September 23, 2009 and Intel hopes to start shipping Light Peak in 2010.[7] According to Engadget, the technology was developed by Intel in collaboration with Apple Inc.[8]“
